The Visitation

Probably Baroque era
Museum of the Convent of St. John the Baptist, Müstair, Switzerland

Elizabeth's greater age is suggested by the more deeply sculpted face. The other faces are very smooth. Mary's typical blue mantle is now blue only on the inside. The young woman with the purse is probably one of the virgins who had accompanied Mary when she left the Temple after Joseph was chosen to be her husband. The smaller figure at the city gate may be another of the virgins, or she could be a development of the tradition of having a youngster contemplate the scene from inside Elizabeth's house.
